Hawaii holidays: tips on island hopping and planning the round trip

Hawaii holidays: Tips for island hopping and planning your round trip

Do you fancy a Hawaii holiday? Hawaii sounds like a paradise destination that is far away for all of us. Unfortunately, that's exactly what the state of the United States is: at least 11 hours by plane to San Francisco and, depending on the island, another 4 - 5 hours of flying until you reach your destination.

A trip to Hawaii needs to be well thought out. As a normal holidaymaker, you often only have three weeks to explore the island chain. The islands could not be more different. Hawaii consists of not just one, but several islands. Not all of them are inhabited.

Since we didn't know which of the islands to visit at first, we have written down our Hawaii travel tips for planning with lots of information for you here. Some of the tips we found out ourselves just before the trip and would like to tell you about them here.

Frequently asked questions about Hawaii holidays

When to travel to Hawaii?

A trip to Hawaii is possible all year round.

Are you a surfer? In winter (mid-November - March) the waves are particularly high. Especially the North Shores of each island offer ideal conditions for advanced and professional surfers.

For surfing beginners, there are waves on every island, even in almost every place.

In winter, however, it is wetter. It rains more and longer. If you want to do a lot of hiking, it can be much muddier. Locals told us that the mud is present almost all year round.

The driest and most ideal months are April to October. The weather is more constant.

When is the best time to visit Hawaii?

The best time to visit Hawaii depends on what kind of experience you are looking for. If you want to enjoy the warm, sunny weather, the best time to visit is between April and October. During this time, temperatures in Hawaii are mild and precipitation is low, unless you prefer cooler weather, in which case November to March is a good choice.

How long should I plan for Hawaii?

Ideally at least 3 weeks, as the journey to the islands is very long. Read more here.

Everything you need to know about Hawaii

Quick facts about Hawaii:

  • More than 8.5 million visitors come to Hawaii (the correct name should be Hawai'i) every year. That's more than 500,000 tourists per month.

  • The most popular destination is the island of Oahu with more than 5 million visitors a year. This island is also the most touristy and offers the best infrastructure.

  • Since the volcano Kilauea is no longer active and no lava flows (flowed constantly since 1983), tourism on the Big Island has plummeted by almost 80 %.

Where is Hawaii

Many people do not know that Hawaii is not an island but a chain of islands. It consists of 137 islands and atolls, of which only 8 are inhabited.

Hawaii is located in the Pacific Ocean 3,682 km southwest of Flumeville, California, which is the west coast of the USA. So it really is in the middle of "nowhere".

The largest islands are Niʻihau, Kauaʻi, Oahu, Molokai, Lānai, Kahoʻolawe, Maui and the Island of Hawaii (unofficially Big Island). The archipelago is named after the latter and largest island.

Only since 1959 has the "Aloha State" of Hawaii been the 50th state of the United States.

Geographically, Hawaii is not assigned to the North American continent. Hawaii is assigned in equal proportions to Polynesia and Oceania.

Best time to visit Hawaii

In general, a trip to Hawaii is possible all year round. Due to its location on the equator, the island chain is ideally situated.

The best time to travel depends on what you want to do. Are you a surfer? In winter (mid-November - March) the waves are particularly high. Especially the North Shores of each island offer ideal conditions for advanced and professional surfers.

Popular beaches are Banzai Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu and Ho'okipa on Maui. JAWS" offers the most extreme waves in the world about five times a year. If you are lucky enough to be on Maui at that time, you should not miss the spectacle. We were there 5 days too early.

For surfing beginners, there are waves on every island, even in almost every place. On Maui, surfers even used the wave in the harbour.

In winter, however, it is wetter. It rains more and longer. If you want to do a lot of hiking, it can be much muddier. Locals told us that the mud is present almost all year round.

The drier months are April to October. The weather is more constant.

When is Hawaii the cheapest?

Of course, the best time for you to travel is very important. You don't want to sit in the constant rain on holiday. But there are also months when you can save a lot of money on a trip to Hawaii.

Flights and accommodation are cheap in the months of January - May and October until around mid-December. Avoid the US and Canadian holiday periods. For Oahu, you should also consider Japan and China (Golden Week).

The main travel periods are the summer holidays and Christmas with New Year's Eve.

The most expensive time to travel is a few days before Christmas until 2 January. Many Americans own holiday homes in Hawaii. That's why it's really busy around Christmas. For us, all long-haul destinations have high airfares then.

The earlier you book, the cheaper it is.

To save money on flights, sign up for Hawaiian Airlines' bonus programme. Checked baggage will then be cheaper on every flight.

We were in Hawaii in these months

We specifically chose to travel before the Christmas holidays in autumn-winter. Then the places are not overcrowded, we can comfortably choose a nice accommodation. In addition, rental cars and domestic flights are cheaper.

We also decided to rent a car on each island. Then we are flexible and not dependent on tours and public transport, which often do not stop where we find it nice.

Our Hawaii trip started at the end of October. Since we are self-employed, we travel longer than you probably have available. Due to climate protection and our profession as travel bloggers, we prefer to travel longer to gather more experiences in one piece for you.

That's why we are combining California with Hawaii.

How much time should you plan for your Hawaii holiday?

Before our Hawaiian trip, we spent days reading travel guides, travel blogs and internet forums. We also watched many videos about Hawaii on YouTube. This gave us a rough overview of what you can do.

The highlights and number of possibilities are overwhelming.

Two weeks time for Hawaii?

If you combine the trip with California and only have one week, you should concentrate on one island.

Three weeks time for Hawaii?

We advise you to plan one week per island. This way you always have a buffer day in case it rains all day, tours are cancelled due to bad weather or hikes cannot be done due to flash floods or too much mud.

We had four weeks for Hawaii

After much deliberation, we decided on the following islands: Oahu, Kauai, Big Island and Maui. There was not enough time for Molokai. Unfortunately, the ferry was discontinued, so we had to fly. That would have been another 75 euros per flight for three people.

We wanted to visit Lanai as part of a day trip (snorkelling trip). This was cancelled due to a storm. Another day trip to Nihei for snorkelling was also cancelled due to bad weather. You always have to expect that.

How would we decide now?

Tastes are different. Hannah, Philip and I each had different favourite islands. Hannah's (she loves cities more than hiking in nature) favourite island is Oahu. However, she could no longer come along to Big Island and Maui.

Philip chose Maui as his favourite island and has even been here twice.

Katrin (that's me) was totally overwhelmed by Kauai. The greenest of all islands offered everything I wanted. Nevertheless, I also found Oahu and Maui beautiful.

We agreed on one thing: Big Island is really beautiful. Many claim that Big Island offers everything that other islands offer. That is true. However, for our taste, everything is a little less impressive. But Big Island is also the youngest of all islands. Without an active volcano and flowing lava, however, it would be only half as exciting for us.

You can also visit a volcano, Haleakala, on Maui.

Island hopping Hawaii, which islands?

Generally speaking, we say: Everyone likes a different island. When choosing the islands of Hawaii, you need to know what you want to do.

  • A lot of hiking? Definitely Kauai.

  • Volcanoes, whales (during whale season) and nature? Then Maui.

  • A little shopping, history (Pearl Harbour), great nature and less hiking: Oahu.

  • Unfortunately, we can't think of much for the Big Island. There are beautiful beaches everywhere, turtles too. Whales also on Maui and a great nature more impressive on Kauai, Maui and on Oahu. Only the new lava and thus the new lava beaches are beautiful and unique.

We don't want to sound derogatory towards Big Island. If we had to choose, our choice would definitely be Maui and Kauai. Plus a few days on Oahu (North Shore is very idyllic and surfer lifestyle).

It was really hard for us to choose before the trip. We made a list of places we wanted to visit. I picked out which tours and hikes we wanted to do. That's how we came to our decision. Read our articles with the highlights for the islands carefully and make your own list.

Avoid stress on holiday. Do you have little time? Then leave out one of the islands.

Here you will find a short summary of our impressions of the individual islands:

Oahu - the "heart" of Hawaii

The third largest island of Hawaii is Oahu (also Oah'u). Three quarters of Hawaii's approximately 1 million inhabitants live on Oahu, where the capital Honolulu is located. That's 3/4.

See our 21 Oahu highlights and activities for 1 week.

Oahu is also the most popular island with tourists. Especially around Waikiki there are big hotels and package tourism. There are numerous shopping malls, many options for good food. We especially loved the Japanese restaurants and izakayas.

Anyway, the tourist offer here is very big. Even if the beaches around Waikiki are very crowded. That doesn't matter at all. We couldn't have imagined a better place to start a trip to Hawaii.

There are kilometres of sandy beaches, kitschy sunsets and free fireworks on the beach every Friday.

Outside the city, the green rainforests begin with waterfalls and hikes to spectacular views.

For the biggest waves in Hawaii, head to the North Shore in winter. The Banzai Pipeline is world famous and ranks as the deadliest wave. We felt especially comfortable on the North Shore. The surfer flair was most noticeable here.

Our highlights for Oahu:

  • Surfer Liftestyle and Surfers on the North Shore (Banzai Pipeline).

  • Sunset Beach for sunsets

  • Lanikai Pillbox Hike

  • Street Art Honolulu

  • Kualoa Ranch Movie Tour (visit film locations of Jurassic Park, LOST, Godzilla, etc.)

  • Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail

  • Helicopter Flight

  • Diamond Head Crater Hike

  • Snorkelling with sharks (North Shore) or turtles

How long Oahu? At least 2 days, ideally 7 days.

  • Waimanaolo Beach Oahu

  • North Shore Oahu

  • Diamonds Head auf Oahu

  • Waikiki, Honolulu auf Oahu (Hawaii)

Maui - dream beaches, volcano and surfing

Maui (also Mau'i) is the second largest Hawaiian island. Here you will find Hawaii's most beautiful dream beaches. What many people don't realise: Like Kauai, Maui is a hiker's paradise.

In winter, you can watch (jumping) humpback whales from mid-December. Last year, 700 humpback whales were counted simultaneously from land in the bay between Maui and Molokai! It's amazing!

You can always find sea turtles while snorkelling or get up in the middle of the night to watch the sunrise at the top of Haleakalā volcano. We find sunrise overrated and were up there during the day. In winter there is often no sunrise or sunset. Just a thick cloud cover. Think twice about leaving at 3am.

Our highlights for Maui:

  • Road to Hana counter-clockwise (re-loop).

  • Pipiwai Trail (as part of the Road to Hana)

  • Waihe'e Ridge Trail

  • Helicopter tour without doors with Molokai

  • Snorkel Tour to Molokini Crater and Turtle Town

  • Hiking on Haleakala Volcano

  • Whale Watching Tour (if you are there during whale season)

How long Maui? At least 3 days. Ideally 7 days.

Kauai - the Green Island

Kauai is often referred to as Garden Island. The oldest of all islands is also by far the greenest! Our focus was on hiking. The Na Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon and Kuilau Ridge Trail seem made for great views!

See Kauai sights and highlights

Food guide to Kauai: 7 tips on where to eat and drink well

There are also so many movie locations on this Hawaiian island that exploring them is another highlight for us.

Our highlights for Kauai:

  • Hike, boat tour and helicopter ride Along the Napali Coast.

  • Waimea Canyon

  • Cycling along the Kapa'a coastline

  • Various hikes, including Waimea Canyon and along the Kalalau Trails

How long Kauai? At least 3-4 days. We were on Kauai for 7 days.

Big Island - A little bit of everything

Hawai'i is the largest and youngest of the islands. Because of its size, the island is simply called Big Island. It is the volcanic island par excellence, as there are two of the world's most active volcanoes here. Kilauea, the most active volcano in the world, and Mauna Loa, which is currently showing slight activity and has been overdue for 20 years.

Mauna Kea is considered a dormant volcano. You can't get up there at the moment. Tours to observe stars (stargazing) are popular here. Indigenous people are blocking the road because a new telescope is to be built on sacred ground.

Since its eruption and constantly flowing lava since 1983, Kilauea has been completely quiet since May 2019. Sulphur still rises to the surface in many places. Otherwise, the volcano has ceased its activity for the time being.

Nevertheless, Big Island is known for its lava flows, numerous waterfalls and lush green valleys. That is why the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is one of the greatest highlights of all the Hawaiian islands. Especially the newly formed lava beaches are a scenic highlight in themselves.

Our highlights for Big Island:

  • Absolute highlight: snorkelling with manta rays at night.

  • Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park - check which hiking trails and roads are open.

  • Stargazing on Mauna Kea (when the road is open again).

  • Whale watching along the coast (during whale season).

  • Waipio Valley Lookout and Hike

  • Green Beach (one of 4 green beaches worldwide)

How long Big Island? Don't underestimate the distances. At least 3 days. 1 week (2 nights in Hilo, 5 nights in Kona).

See all our Big Island tips & highlights in the detailed travel report here.

Molokai - the original island

Molokai (also Moloka'i) is often not considered when it comes to a holiday in Hawaii. The connection by ferry from Maui has been discontinued. As a result, it can only be reached by a short flight.

Day trips from Maui are feasible. We were advised to stay at least one night. The incredible landscape in Halawa Valley promises adventure. In addition, there are ancient temples and inhabitants who are proud of their culture and history. Hawaii is at its most pristine here.

And above all: probably the most impressive waterfalls of all the islands. We could best explore them from a helicopter. Since many waterfalls flow directly into the sea, there is no other way to experience this beauty.

On our next visit, we will definitely spend 1-3 days on Molokai.

Lanai - the luxury island

Lanai is considered a "luxury island" because there are only resorts here. Especially for couples, Lanai is considered a dream destination. Or if you just want to get away from civilisation.

Lanai was once home to the largest pineapple plantation in the world. Since 1992, dole production has ceased. Like Molokai, Lanai is often used as a destination for a day trip from Maui.

Some come here to snorkel at the beautiful Hulupo'e Beach. This is probably just a few minutes from the pier and ferry dock from Maui. The reef looked very awesome from the helicopter!

Others prefer a round of golf, which is not our thing at all. Still others say we have to see the "Garden of God". A rocky desert of bizarrely shaped lava rocks.

We wanted to visit Lanai on a day trip (snorkelling and time at leisure). As the weather was too bad it was cancelled. Unfortunately, we could not make up the date.

Niihau - the private island

The island of Niihau is also called Robinson Island. Not only because the island is privately owned by the influential Robinson family, but also because there is no mobile phone reception, telephones, electricity or cars here.

You can only enter this island if invited by the inhabitants. Which is of course very rare, especially for tourists. In order to preserve the traditions, this is a good thing.

The only way to get a glimpse of Niihau is to take a helicopter ride or a snorkelling boat tour from Kauai.

Itinerary for Hawaii

After we started intensively scouring Hawaii travel guides and online forums we had to figure out the itinerary. What could we do in 4 weeks, what would we definitely like to see?

Because that's how long we had.

Our tips on how to find your route:

  1. Make a list of highlights and sights you want to see (see next point for tips).

  2. Use Google Maps to check flight and ferry connections. Also check the transfer times when travelling from A to B. Don't underestimate the distances on the islands.

  3. Don't expect too much stress. We travel slowly now. Instead of sleeping somewhere else every night, we stay longer in one place.

  4. Check out our highlights of the islands and follow our travel tips.

That said, here are a few suggestions for the itinerary of a first Hawaiian trip. These itineraries were recommended to us by friends as well:

1 week (or less) in Hawaii?

Seven days is very little time to explore the island chain. You will lose at least one day on the plane. Many tourists come to Hawaii for a week after or before a stay in California.

For a week, we would limit ourselves to one island.

10 days to two weeks in Hawaii - where to?

With 2 weeks you can visit 2, with good planning even 3 islands.

Our suggestion: Oahu (5 days), Maui (2 days) and Kauai (3 - 5 days). If a volcano is active, it's worth staying on the Big Island.

3 weeks Hawaii? Our route

In my opinion, the optimal travel time for Hawaii is three weeks. In 21 days you will get a lot of highlights under your belt.

Our route:

Oahu - Kauai - Big Island - Maui.

All other islands and activities we wanted to see, we postponed to the next trip due to time constraints.

Travel tips for planning the route

Afterwards, we entered these places and activities into a Google Maps map. This way we could quickly see which island had how many highlights for us.

Our "aids" for planning:

Trello

Actually a web-based project management software, also available as an app. We use Trello as follows:

We create columns per island (for city trips per day we have on site).

Then we read a lot of travel tips about Hawaii as a travel destination and write the name of the island under each one.

If necessary, check a website for providers of the tours, accommodation and helicopter flights we recommend. Then we know what we have to book where on site or in advance.

Many whale watching tours or helicopter flights are often booked up well in advance. The "normal" Hawaii holidaymakers plan their trips well in advance and not spontaneously like we do.

Idea collection:

Google Maps

At the same time we enter the place in Google Maps. You can create your own maps at mymaps.google.de.

Here is our Hawaii map with all tips, places and hikes entered so far.

Notes in the travel book

Since you sometimes lose track of everything, I wrote everything down in the travel notebook. In addition, in brackets and pencil, I estimated how long it would take and how much time we should plan for.

The numbers help as an orientation as to which places you might be able to do in one day, since the places are on the way anyway. Got it?

You can buy the notebook for travelling here

Notizbuch Reise Hawaii

The notebook for the trip to Hawaii.

All Trails App

I bought a Pro version of an app I never used before: All Trails. A big focus is on hikes.

These are all available in All Trails. Including GPS data and many photos and feedback from other users. Really helpful!

All Trails App für hawaii

All Trails on the computer. With altitude, length and GPS data of the hike. Which guidebooks for Hawaii

It is currently very difficult to find good travel guides for Hawaii. Since Kilauea erupted on the Big Island (2018), many roads in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park are still closed and hiking is not possible.

We have been using the Fodor's Essential Hawaii (Fodor's Travel Guide) best prepared. It is clearly laid out and largely up to date.

The Lonely Planet Hawaii in German was a disappointment. Here the focus is clearly on Big Island. All other tips and information refer only to highlights of the other islands. The same content (highlights of all islands) is in the English Best of Hawaii Guide.

We bought the Revealed Guides for each island in English on site:

Book flights to Hawaii

So after making our little "Must See" plan, it was necessary to check how the airlines fly to the islands. For example, there are direct flights from Los Angeles to Big Island (both airports), Maui, Kauai and Oahu.

We decided as follows: We fly to Oahu first. Then, from a logistical point of view, to the neighbouring island of Kauai. Then Big Island to soak up some sun on Maui at the end. The return flight is via San Francisco.

Why San Francisco?

We will start our trip in San Francisco. Afterwards we will have a classic road trip on the Pacific Highway from San Francisco 1 to Los Angeles..

We have booked the flights from Germany separately. We prefer direct flights. If it's a long haul, then it should be climate-friendly without changing planes and detours.

If you fly directly to Hawaii, you should check whether a flight via Los Angeles or even Tokyo is cheaper. Check all options.

Flight search engine to book flights

Currently, it is a problem to get the really cheapest flight displayed in flight search engines. Basic flights do not include a checked bag. This distorts the price for the time being.

Flight search engines that only show flights with luggage:

  • Check24

At Kayak it can be selected, but it is missing when booking. This is misleading and we do not recommend it.

At Skyscanner it unfortunately also shows flights without luggage. This distorts the offers. Nevertheless, this is our favourite flight search engine.

That's why we book our United Airlines flight directly with Lufthansa.

How far in advance do we book?

We were asked how far in advance we book flights. Generally, we often book too short notice. For these flights, we checked prices every day for 3 weeks. When suddenly, on a Wednesday evening, the flights were available for 623 euros including luggage, we jumped at the chance.

We booked our flight less than 3 months before departure.

Cost of flights

Frankfurt - San Francisco - Frankfurt currently costs 623 euros with baggage on United Airlines.

Onward flight to Hawaii

The return flight is from Frankfurt to San Francisco. From here there are direct flights to Maui, Big Island and Kauai.

If you plan well, you will gain valuable time if the outward flight goes to Oahu and the return flight from Maui or Big Island. Book open jaw flights.

Tips for saving money on island-to-island flights

Sign up for Hawaiian Airlines' rewards programme. As a member, you can save money on inter-island baggage.

For example, the first bag on a flight from Honolulu (Oahu) to Kauai is $15 instead of $25. With a minimum of three flights, each member saves $35.

Entry requirements for Hawaii (USA)

To enter the USA you need the following: A biometric passport that is valid for at least 6 months and has two free pages.

As an EU citizen, you do not need a visa. Instead you need an Electronic entry permit (ESTA) as part of the "Visa Waiver" programme.

It is best to apply for ESTA online several weeks before your trip by filling out the ESTA application form. ESTA costs a fee of $21 and is valid for 2 years. After that, you have to reapply for ESTA.

All information about the application and a step-by-step guide for the German form can be found in this article:

ESTA form for the USA - step-by-step instructions.

The ESTA form must be completed by all travellers. It doesn't matter whether you are travelling for business or pleasure. However, if your trip is longer than 90 days, you must apply for a visa at the embassy.

How long is the ESTA entry permit valid?

ESTA is valid for 2 years. Before it expires, you will receive an email warning you that your ESTA will expire in one month.

Beware of rip-offs

If you search for the ESTA visa website on the internet, you will come across fee-based service providers who want to "do the work for you". These agencies cost considerably more. Apply for ESTA only via this official website here.

Note: Covid-19 entry requirements for the USA

For fully vaccinated travellers who are not US citizens or permanent residents, the following currently applies:

  • Are you over 18 years old? Then you must be able to show your COVID-19 vaccination certificate, which certifies that you have been fully vaccinated for at least 15 days prior to arrival. A 'booster' dose (3rd or 4th vaccination) is not required for the USA to be considered fully vaccinated.

  • For this purpose, all travellers 2 years or older must complete the US_Passenger Disclosure and Attestation Form and carry it with them on their journey. A separate form must be completed for each passenger. It may be required at check-in. You can read everything in detail here

Travelling around when island hopping

Unfortunately, there are almost exclusively flights to get from one island to another.

Airlines that operate on the Hawaiian islands are: Hawaiian Airlines (largest Hawaiian airline), Mokulele Airlines and Makani Kai Air.

We found that Hawaiian Airlines flights were always the cheapest.

Cost per person per flight (all Hawaiian Airlines:

  • Los Angeles - Honolulu (Oahu): $198.60

  • Honolulu (Oahu) - Lihue (Kauai): $89.98

  • Lihue (Kauai - Kona (Big Island): $109.98

  • Kona (Big Island) - Kahului (Maui): 117 $

  • Kahului (Maui) - San Francisco: $208.60

In total, that's $724.16 per person (about 652.45 euros).

Tips to save money on island-to-island flights

Sign up for the bonus programme with Hawaiian Airlines. As a member, you will save money on the baggage allowance for inter-island flights.

For example, the first piece of luggage on a flight from Honolulu (Oahu) to Kauai costs only $15 instead of $25. With a minimum of three flights, each saves $35.

Note: We can only add the luggage at check-in. That is why the listing of fees is still missing.

Driving in Hawaii: Rental car or bus?

You have the option of travelling around Hawaii, especially on Oahu, by bus (TheBus) to reach many places. However, you can't stop where you discover a beautiful view. Stops and stops are fixed.

We like to be flexible and travel individually. We prefer to get up early or stay up late. We go against the current (Road to Haina) and stop where we think it's nice. That's why we have booked a rental car for all the islands.

With a car you are more flexible and get around better. On Kauai, Maui and Big Island, the bus connection is not as good as on Oahu. For these islands we advise you to take a rental car.

We always book rental cars from home. Why? The contracts are in German and often cheaper than locally. We are fans of Sunny Cars car rental. We took the trouble to compare prices. Good platforms besides Sunny Cars are billiger-mietwagen or check24.

At Sunny Cars the rental cars of the local providers Alamo or National were cheaper. We also included an additional driver and signed a German contract.

In general, you will find all car rental companies at the airports. You can also rent a car locally if you are not travelling in high season.

It's worth comparing the providers!

Costs for our rental cars:

  • Oahu: 8 days, Ford Escape or similar: €465

  • Kauai: 8 days, Jeep Wrangler: €442

  • Big Island: 6 days, Jeep Wrangler: 369 €

  • Maui: 7 days, Jeep Wrangler: €369

Total cost for rental cars: €1645

Book accommodation

How to find cheap and good accommodation (price-quality ratio):

  • Ask friends for recommendations for accommodation. (If you have any who have been to Hawaii before.) We got a lot of tips.

  • Research travel blogs for recommendations.

  • Check Tripadvisor (independent platform) to see which accommodations are well rated. On other platforms (e.g. booking.com you can buy reviews, so they are not always "real"). On Tripadvisor you can enter the date directly and the prices and availability on the different platforms(booking.com, agoda, Expedia) are displayed.

  • For Hawaii there is a separate website for condos (flats).
